Romsey Young Farmers

Club Report:

Romsey Young Farmers have had a very successful year gaining a good number of active members. I would like to welcome along Susan Holliday who makes her way from the Isle of Wight each week. This year we have been involved with several fund raising activities, these include, the Christmas Party, Carol Singing, Summer party and Charity Dung Drop. The highlights have been winning the shield at the County Rally, hosting our Exchangees from Worcestershire and Australia & not forgetting the AGM in Blackpool.

We started the year in November when we held a Young Farmer's exchange with Henley Swan YFC in Worcestershire. Fourteen Romsey YFC members made their way up to Worcestershire for a fun filled packed weekend. We were escorted to the three Counties Showground YFC ball. This was a great night; it was huge, even bigger than our County Dance. The next day we went go-carting. Unfortunately not all members were able to take part in this activity due to the size of their head! We hit the clubs and pubs of Worcester on the Saturday night, followed by a well deserved long lay in. On the Sunday we went paintballing which was really great fun; we all had to dress up in Camouflage overalls (very fetching!) and scramble across the wet woodland to avoid being shot not once by your own team but repeatedly! Thank you very much boys! We all went home very tired, with bad heads, lots of bruises and one of the more mature members of the group with carpet burns and a scabby head!

At Christmas we held our annual party at Sherfield English Village Hall which was well attended. Yet again this party proves to have been a winner, raising over one hundred pounds towards our club funds. The following week sixteen members visited both Jack/Ros Parsons and Jean/John Bell's house to Carol Sing for their friends and family. Thank you to you all for inviting us into your homes and providing us drinks with very tasty nibbles. Undoubtedly our singing could have done with a little bit more practise but a jolly time by had by all. The evening raised a total of £135 which will be donated to the Pedo Children's Charity at our annual Harvest Supper.

In February we welcomed Henley Swan YFC down to Hampshire to see what we get up to down south. We held a fancy dress 60's/70's party at Calmore Cricket Club. This night was well attended by fellow Hampshire Young Farmers and we raised £155. I would like to say thank you very much to Rachel Harvey for organising the event so well. The following day we all participated in a Car Treasure Hunt which was 25 miles long! Thank you to Wellow Growmore for setting up the Car Treasure Hunt and allowing us to use it. That night we went into Salisbury to hit the pubs and clubs, this proved to be a very late night or should I say early morning for some! After everyone had nursed their hangovers we all traipsed off to Dene Farm, Wallop, the home of our President to participate in some clay pigeon shooting on the Sunday.  In total 36 members shot with other members trapping and scoring. By 5pm we were all exhausted and in need of a Hog Roast roll and a pint at our usual jaunt, the Five Bells. The day was a great success, it couldn't have happened without the help of Nigel Pond & Simon Linstead. Thank you.

In April we held our annual charity Dung Drop which took place at Fourjays Farm, Ower.  We would like to thank Mr Jack Parsons for donating the dung and vehicles to enable the club to raise £210 for the charities account. Our Charities this year are the Disabled Water Skiing Trust at Ringwood and the Pedo Children's Charity at Lyndhurst.

The highlight of my Young Farmer year was when Romsey won the Senior Rally Shield, at last! I think this was our best achievement of the year. Well done to everyone who made the effort and took part in the rally, without these members this could never have been possible. Another poignant moment within the year was when the boys came so close to winning the 5 a-side football at South East Area, unfortunately we came in at second place. A good effort boys for playing in the snow (rather you than me) and thank you Pete for being so passionate about the game and nearly getting sent off!

Well done to all of you who have participated in the stockjudging events throughout the year be it, the New Forest Show, Stockjudging day at Sparsholt or Shadow Judging at the Romsey Show. A special congratulations goes to Susan Holliday, Pete Collinson & Becky Harvey for doing so well at the New Forest.

I would like to say a personnel thank you to Sally Bucknole for being so understanding and patient throughout they year. I would also like to say a very big thank you to those members within the club which have always been willing to muck in and get involved, there is nothing more frustrating than organised activities going to waste due to unenthusiastic members.

In conclusion we have all had a lot of fun and far too much to drink……
