What is YFC?
YFC (Young Farmers Club's) is a Voluntary Youth Organisation for young people in the 10-26 age group. However, it is not solely a Club for farmers and their sons and daughters, or indeed for people involved in agriculture.
YFC is a recognised National Charity, which has full National backing and is politically neutral. It is made up of a number of autonomous localised Clubs, Run by the Members for the Members. Only Club Members and their representatives have voting rights and so only members can decide upon the content of their Club programme.
In Hampshire there are 14 rurally based clubs, who collectively form the 'Hampshire Federation of Young Farmers' Club's'.
YFC's provide young people with a unique opportunity to enjoy a dynamic social life, develop skills, get involved with the local community, travel abroad and take part in a wide range of competitions and training at county, regional and national level, including sports, crafts and life skills.
The YFCs are grouped into 48 federations based mainly on county boundaries, and Hampshire YFC being one of them. The federations are grouped further into six regional areas in England plus Wales and together form the NFYFC.
The National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (NFYFC) is the head body of the 650 Young Farmers’ Clubs and 48 federations located throughout England and Wales. Their memberships comprise 22,000 young people aged between 10 and 26 years. As such, the NFYFC is the largest rural youth organisation of its kind.
The day-to-day administration of the NFYFC is the responsibility of the Chief Executive and a central office staff of 12. The NFYFC itself is governed by the National Council, which comprises 120 members, half of which are elected YFC members from across England and Wales.
Many council members hold additional positions within the YFC organisation such as Area Chairman, County Chairman or Club Leader, but all of them also serve on one of four national steering groups: Competitions; Agriculture & Rural Affairs; Personal Development and Marketing & Membership services.
In addition, a Board of Management oversees the smooth running of the NFYFC, its finances and corporate governance and compliance.
The National Council, Board of Management and four steering groups each meet three times a year.
ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE
Clubs
Young farmers’ Clubs comprise young people who live, work or have an interest in the countryside. They join together to form a Young Farmers’ Club, where they can pursue their interests through an exciting programme of activities encompassing agriculture, sport, community work, the environment and a dynamic social life.
Members are responsible for their own activities and finances, electing Club Officers each year to ensure the continuity and vibrancy of the Club. Their programmes should be developed by the members to reflect the diversity of the clubs’ membership and meet the changing needs of rural young people.
County
Each Club affiliates to its County Federation and elects representatives to its County Executive. The Executive Committee is responsible for organising the County events and activities, and administer the extensive programme of activities. County Federations employ a range of staff to carry out the administrative and developmental function, so that members are better able to achieve YFC ideals. Each county programme is unique as it combines activities that compliment the national programme with those suggested by its own membership.
National
Both Clubs and County Federations are affiliated to the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs whose role is to devise activities based programmes of personal development and social education that its members. Ensuring that the democratic structure of YFC is maintained is of paramount importance, and to achieve this each County Federation elects representatives to attend the National Council, which has responsibility for deciding policy, activity content and the development of the organisation. The NFYFC is supported by a team of staff who have a responsibility to its members to ensure National status for the YFC organisation and secure funding for its activities.
